Canvs Artist and Studio Terms
Version 2026-10-21. Last updated 21 October 2026.
1. About these terms
- These terms apply to tattoo artists and studios who list on Canvs, and to referral promoters for section 7. They add to the Canvs General Terms, which you also agree to. If the two conflict on a matter about artists or studios, these terms apply.
- Canvs is run by Inkd Group Pty Ltd (ABN 86 768 265 615), trading as Canvs.
- To take payments you also agree to the Stripe Connected Account Agreement. Stripe processes every payment on Canvs.
- You are running your own business. You are not an employee, contractor or agent of Canvs.
2. Going live
- Anyone can sign up as an artist or studio and set up their page. You can be booked once every set-up step is done, including:
- your profile, work, suburb, hours and prices
- your deposit and cancellation policy
- a Stripe account that can receive payouts
- confirming your email address
- Opening by region. Canvs opens one region at a time. Until Canvs opens in your region you can set up, but you cannot be booked and your page is not public. We tell you before your region opens.
- Licences. You confirm that you, and every artist working through your studio, hold every licence, registration and approval your state, territory and local council require for tattooing, and will keep them current. We may ask for proof at any time. If you cannot give it, we may hide or remove your page.
- You must be 18 or older and legally able to run your business in Australia.
3. Your bookings
- Your price. You set your prices, hours and deposit. The deposit is between 20% and 50% of the total, in whole dollars. You choose a cancellation policy from the options Canvs offers.
- The Canvs fee. Canvs adds a fee of 10% of your price, to the cent, which the person booking pays on top. You receive your full price. The fee is taken from each charge as it is made, split between the deposit and the balance.
- Marking complete. About 48 hours before the session, Canvs authorises the balance on the person's card. Mark the session complete on Canvs when you finish, and the balance is charged. If the price changed on the day, enter what you charged: it can be lower than the booked balance, never higher, and $0 releases the hold. The person booking can also confirm the session went ahead, which charges the booked balance.
- If nobody confirms. Canvs reminds you to mark the session complete. If neither you nor the person booking confirms it, Canvs gives them at least 24 hours' notice and then charges the booked balance before the authorisation ends. If they report a problem, Canvs will not charge on its own, but you can still mark the session complete. If you mark it complete after the authorisation has ended, Canvs sends them a link to pay the balance.
- Missed sessions. If the person does not turn up, mark the session as missed. The balance is not charged and the hold is released; the deposit follows your cancellation policy.
- Honour your bookings. Turn up at the booked time and do the agreed work. Agree any change to the design, price or length with the person before you start.
Who pays when a booking is cancelled:
| Who cancels | Refund to the person booking | Comes from | The Canvs fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| You | Whole deposit | Your Stripe balance | Canvs keeps it, so you cover it |
| The person booking, inside your free window | Deposit less the Canvs fee | Your Stripe balance | Canvs keeps it |
| The person booking, outside your window | What your policy allows | Your Stripe balance | Canvs keeps it |
- When you cancel, you pick a reason from a fixed list. Do not use cancellations to move a booking off Canvs.
- If you owe refunds that your Stripe balance cannot cover, you may not be able to take new payments until they are settled.
- Consult. A booking starts with a 30-minute consult before the tattoo when the session is less than 72 hours after it is made, and when it is 72 hours or more away and the person booking did not send a brief. The consult is not charged, so build it into your rate. The booked time starts with the consult and needs room for it within your hours.
- Keep contact on Canvs. Anything you write to the person booking on Canvs must not include a phone number, email address, link or social media handle, or ask them to contact you somewhere else. Do not use a brief or a booking to move contact off Canvs.
4. Studios and their artists
- A studio can invite artists to work through it on Canvs. An artist joins a studio by accepting the invite and the role offered, and in no other way. Either can end the link at any time.
- The role decides whose Stripe account a booking is paid into, and nothing else.
| Role | Bookings paid to | Rent, chair fees or splits |
|---|---|---|
| Employee | The studio | Not applicable |
| Resident | The artist | Between artist and studio, off Canvs |
| Guest | The artist | Between artist and studio, off Canvs |
- The role does not decide anyone's employment or contractor status, tax, super or insurance. Those are for the studio and artist to settle under the law. Canvs is not a party to their arrangement and does not collect rent, chair fees or commission. Any split shown on Canvs is a record the parties keep for themselves.
- A studio that marks an artist as an employee promises that it is entitled to receive payment for that artist's work, and that it will pay the artist what it owes them.
- The studio is responsible for its premises and for the artists it lists, as well as each artist being responsible for their own work.
- Contact details a studio gives for an artist are used to invite that artist and for Canvs messages about their account, and for nothing else.
5. Payments, Stripe and chargebacks
- You are the seller. Every payment is a charge on your own Stripe account. You are the merchant of record. Canvs never holds the money.
- What you authorise Canvs to do. You authorise Canvs, through Stripe Connect, to create, authorise, capture and refund charges on your account for Canvs bookings, to take the Canvs fee from each charge, and to make the refunds these terms require.
- Statements show CANVS with your name, for example "CANVS* KIER".
- Payouts go from your Stripe balance to your bank on Stripe's schedule. Questions about your Stripe account go to Stripe; questions about Canvs go to us.
- Chargebacks. As merchant of record, you answer chargebacks and bear the disputed amount and Stripe's dispute fee. Canvs will give you the booking records to help. If your Stripe balance cannot cover a chargeback or refund and Canvs has to pay it, you must repay Canvs, and we may recover it from your future payouts.
- If your Stripe account closes or is restricted, tell us straight away. You cannot be booked until it is fixed. Bookings you cannot honour must be cancelled as artist cancellations under section 3, and you remain responsible for the refunds.
6. Tax
- Your tax. You are responsible for your own income tax, GST and tax invoices for your work. If you are registered for GST, your prices on Canvs must include it.
- The Canvs fee. Inkd Group Pty Ltd is not registered for GST. The Canvs fee includes no GST and we do not issue tax invoices for it. We will tell you before that changes.
- ABN. Stripe asks for your business details, including your ABN if you have one, when you set up payments. Give it if you have one.
- Reporting to the ATO. Platforms like Canvs may have to report sellers' details and earnings to the Australian Taxation Office under the sharing economy reporting regime. By using Canvs you agree that we may share your name, ABN, contact details and Canvs earnings with the ATO where the law requires it.
7. Referral program
- Who can refer. Anyone with a Canvs referral link can refer artists to Canvs, including artists, studios and promoters. Section 8 of the General Terms also applies.
- What you earn. 10% of the Canvs platform fee on the bookings the referred artist takes, for 12 months. The 12 months start when the referred artist becomes bookable in an open region.
- Earnings come out of the Canvs fee. They never reduce what the referred artist is paid or change what the person booking pays.
- Studio employees cannot earn referral rewards for artists at their own studio. You cannot refer yourself or a second account of your own.
- Earnings on a booking that is charged back are reversed.
- Earnings stay held until you set up payouts with Stripe. We pay them monthly by Stripe transfer, and any month under $20 carries forward.
- Say that you earn. Whenever you recommend Canvs while earning referral rewards, say so clearly in the same place, for example "I earn a referral reward from Canvs".
- We may withhold earnings from referrals we reasonably believe are self-referrals or fraud, and we will tell you why. We may change or end the program with 30 days' notice. Earnings already made are still paid.
8. Your page, content and conduct
- Your page must be accurate: your real name or trading name, your own work, real prices and real availability.
- Upload work you made, or work you have permission to show, and nothing else. Do not show another artist's work as your own.
- Photos of people booking. Each booking shows whether the person agreed to their finished piece being photographed for your portfolio. Follow their answer, and remove the photo if they later ask.
- Health information you receive at booking is for deciding whether the tattoo is safe. Keep it private and use it for nothing else.
- Do not take a booking found on Canvs off Canvs to avoid the fee, and do not ask people to.
- Do not offer anything in exchange for a review, or post reviews about yourself.
- Suspension. We may hide your page or suspend your account if you break these terms, if we receive a credible safety complaint, or if your licence cannot be shown. Where it is fair and safe, we tell you why before acting and give you a chance to respond. You can ask us to review the decision within 14 days, and we reply within 14 days.
9. Liability and indemnity
- You use Canvs for your business. Where the Australian Consumer Law lets us limit our liability for a failure to meet a consumer guarantee, our liability to you is limited to supplying the service again or paying the cost of having it supplied again.
- For anything else, and to the extent the law allows, our total liability to you is capped at the Canvs fees taken on your bookings in the 12 months before the claim. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, including lost bookings or profit. This does not apply to loss caused by our fraud, negligence or breach.
- Your indemnity. You agree to cover Canvs for loss and claims caused by your breach of these terms, your negligence, or your tattoo work. This is reduced to the extent Canvs caused or contributed to the loss.
- You are responsible for any insurance your business needs, such as public liability and professional indemnity.
10. Closing your account or leaving a studio
- You can delete your account yourself in your settings, at any time and without a fee. Before you can, you must finish or cancel:
- upcoming bookings
- balances held on a card
- refunds still waiting on funds
- unpaid referral earnings
- future studio rentals
- for a studio, the artists still linked to it
- Deleting your Canvs account does not close your Stripe account. Close it with Stripe if you want to.
- We keep booking, payment, payout, refund, referral and consent records, your ABN and your Stripe account ID for 7 years, as the law requires, with your name and email removed.
- Marketing that already shows your work may stay up after you leave, but we will not make new marketing with it.
- Leaving a studio. Either the artist or the studio can end their link on Canvs. Bookings already made stay with whoever they are paid to.
- Changes to these terms follow section 10.5 of the General Terms: at least 14 days' notice, and you can close your account before the change without any fee or penalty.
